IRA NEWSLETTER PROJECT #5: Biblionasium

Biblionasium is another exceptional website that is worth exploring. The mission of this site is to influence positive literacy habits as it encourages students to read daily. Biblionasium operates similarly to many social media platforms, allowing students to connect with others across the nation and share their book recommendations. Likewise, the layout of the site is colorful and the operations are child-friendly. Through this platform, students of all grade levels are able to filter and discover texts that conform to their specific interests.  Biblionasium can be described as similar to the website “Good Reads” as it operates through a similar context.

Equally important, Biblionasium offers all students and teachers an opportunity to partake in a “reader’s workshop” environment. To further explain, the site provides a safe domain for students to log their reading progress, challenge themselves and review and recommend texts for their classmates. These actions aid in the development of opinions and summarizations that will serve as a scaffold for writing skills. Meanwhile, both teachers and parents are able to monitor student progress and assess their level of learning. In addition, the website provides both teachers and parents with free resources including videos and a list of other useful websites and organizations.  Overall, Biblionasium is an effective literacy website. The entire platform is dedicated to allowing students to remain engaged as they read and network with each other. The students will be tasked to read more books and learn how to properly talk about them. It allows students to set their own personal goals, encouraging them to develop ownership of their learning. Biblionasium is an inviting community where students can freely challenge themselves and share excitement about reading with their peers.
