For
effective literacy website #6, I have decided to review a literacy website that
I have found very useful most especially during a time when distance learning
was the prioritized means of teaching. This
website is called https://mrnussbaum.com/.
First off, it was created by a Virginia public school teacher, Greg Nussbaum
who had experience teaching in the 2nd through 6th grade
classrooms. He has created content across many different subjects to include
but not limited to history, geography, science, math, people, holidays and much
more.
To use Mr.Nussbaum.com, simply go to
his website and click on the different subjects to explore. Mr.Nussbaum.com is
free and a registration could be completed but it is not necessary to gain
access to material. His registration also includes a cloze reading (contextual
vocabulary) app. Mr. Nussbaum is a popular website known to many parents,
teachers, and students. He has over 3,500 content pages that could be accessed
by its users. The website offers dozens of reading materials and interactive
activities online. I believe that
students would find this entertaining as many of his activities relate to some
of his interactive games.
One of the things I really enjoy
about the website is that it is very informational. While teaching my students
social studies, I used his articles to teach the content. For example, I taught
the 13 colonies using his website. When you click on a colony, you are given a
short article that tells the student about that colony. The pictures are
relevant to the topic and there is an audio for students who are struggling
readers or those who need help pronouncing words. At the bottom of the article,
students could find related articles to the topic. They may also find related
activities like reading comprehension stories with an interactive quiz that
checks for understanding.
Overall, I really appreciate
Mr.Nussbaum.com for its interactive activities that engage many students. It is
informational and the content is trustworthy and accurate. I would use this in
my class again as my students loved reading the articles and completed the
activities online. Students may also access this tool at home for more fun and
practice.
