Math+Literacy (https://www.mathplusliteracy.com) is a website dedicated to unite the two worlds of math and literacy. Created by educators Kateri Thunder, Ph.D. and Alisha Demchak, M.Ed. and featuring other educators, readers, writers, and mathematicians, Math+Literacy’s goal is to build a bridge between literacy and math– to connect what teachers know and do in literacy to what is effective in math.
The website includes cohesive professional development resources such as blog posts, workshops, book lists, and Instructional frameworks to support teachers with instructional planning. The website also includes free downloadable student worksheets for teachers to use to help students connect what they already know and do well in literacy to productive problem solving and learning in mathematics instruction.
The most beneficial part of the website for me would be the blog posts because not only are they interesting topics, they also include a variety of strategies to implement in the classroom, as well as the opportunity to read resources of other educators in their journey to bridge the gap between literacy and math. Some topics include the importance of diversifying the books on our shelves, the Success Criteria for number talks, and a concept called “The Math Diet,” which is an instructional framework to grow mathematicians based on math education research. The blog posts date from 2016 to 2020. Although there haven’t been new blog posts in the last couple of years, the topics posted remain relevant to the needs of today
