IRA Newsletter Project (#2) - CommonLit.org

CommonLit (https://www.commonlit.org) is a comprehensive literacy program with thousands of reading lessons, full-year ELA curriculum, benchmark assessments, and standards-based data for teachers. It is a free website with the option to subscribe to a paid plan for schools and districts. Free access includes access to the CommonLit Digital library that has thousands of reading lessons and materials. It also includes access to the CommonLit 360 Curriculum where you can access resources like vocabulary quizzes, writing lessons, and digital assignments that students can complete directly on the website. Paid access includes extra features such as webinars, on-demand professional development, integrations over to other websites, and skills assessments.

Upon registering, you can create classes and add students. You can also import classes and students with Google Classroom for easy integration. After, you can begin finding the perfect story, article, poem, or other reading passage to assign students. You can search and filter through the Digital Library.

The Digital Library and CommonLit 360 gives access to lessons about different units. Content can be filtered by content type (texts, text sets, themes, book pairings, units, or target lessons), grade level, Lexile Range, and genre. Content can be further filtered by themes, literary devices, standards, and even languages.

CommonLit is a great literacy website because it provides teachers with powerful resources that they could use to plan instruction. It makes it easy to supplement students with engaging lessons, as well as see students’ reading growth increase throughout the year.
