IRA NEWSLETTER PROJECT WEEK 2: STARFALL

Starfall is another effective site created to embed positive reading skills in early emergency readers. Founded in 2002 by the Starfall Education Foundation, it is a publicly supported, non-profit organization that provides free and low-cost learning experiences for all children. In other words, PreK-3rd grade students of varying backgrounds are capable of accessing literary concepts that match their own specific needs. Additionally, Starfall also offers resources in other content areas such as mathematics and language arts. This program is free and can be accessed through multiple electronic devices via most internet browsers and through a downloadable app found in major digital play stores. Starfall’s main objective is to deliver literacy support through resources centered around play and positive reinforcement.

Correspondingly, the activities available are research-based and align with the Common Core State Standards. Therefore serving as an enjoyable medium to be used by both students in various support programs (EX. English Language Learners, Special Education) and inside a regular classroom setting. Although the Starfall program offers many free activities, annual membership programs for the classroom and whole-school use are available as well.

Comparatively, the aesthetics of the site are alluring and promotes student engagement due to its colorful graphics and neat layout. Both teachers, parents, and students are capable of easily navigating through the site and require minimal technological experience. Moreover, user support is available as well from the Starfall headquarters in Boulder, Colorado. Another interesting feature is the child restrictions available if a student were to accidentally wander into the membership options page. To demonstrate, a mathematical problem that can only be solved by an adult appears. Thus, preventing children from unintentionally purchasing a membership.

As aforementioned, Starfall offers a plethora of research-based activities that also align with the Common Core State Standards available for both teachers and parents. Under the parent-teacher center, there is an endless amount of free resources, which include guides, posters, lesson plans, practice sheets, and research articles. All of which are created by highly-renowned educators and researchers. Given these points, provides Starfall the credibility of being an effective tool in promoting literacy for all students.
