Reading Rockets Literacy Website Review

Review by Celia Chavez

After using the Google Search engine and sifting through the results, I decided to go with Reading Rockets, which can be accessed at the following address: https://www.readingrockets.org/article/apps-and-websites-build-literacy-skills-top-picks-common-sense-education

I have used this resource to discuss other forum topics, but had a chance to explore it more thoroughly for the sake of this review. It is an astounding and versatile tool, and I will share my favorite features.

Teaching Reading:

Under this drop-down menu, you will find Classroom strategies that are organized by purpose and B/D/A Reading (Before, During or After). These strategies come with videos, comprehensible strategies, downloadable templates, and modified versions for ELL or special learners. My favorite part is that there are even recommended books. All these features are available for every strategy! Quite impressive.

This section also includes a Teaching Reading Course for K-3, actual writing samples from students, webcasts, and even Reading 101 for parents.

Helping Struggling Readers:

This section has a plethora of literacy tools for our students that are having a difficult time with reading and writing. While there are too many features to list all of them here, some of the topics include “Why Kids Struggle’” “Target the Problem,” and “Reading Interventions.” Also included are a ton of resources for parents to use and learn from. What I love about this site the most is that it puts a heavy emphasis on parents helping with literacy. It is widely known that literacy is an endeavor that must be a team effort and should include students, teachers, parents, and the whole community.

Reading Rockets also includes a huge list of children’s books from A-Z, as well as Reading Topics. My only complaint is that it is focused on K-3 instruction, but I can still use the tools and strategies for my struggling readers and special populations. Please check it out when you have the chance!
