ReadWorks - International Literacy Association Newsletter Weekly Project: Effective Literacy Website #2 by Andrea Espinal

While searching for an effective literacy website, I decided to review the website Readworks.org. This is a free and nonprofit organization that allows teachers and students access to a ton of articles and resources that they can use for literacy. Readworks.org is widely used for its easy navigation and the way the content is organized. The content is suitable for different age groups and there are modifications and accommodations for English language learners. This website also benefits teachers as it provides lesson plans, skills, strategies, and units that align with the Common Core State Standards.

Reading passages range in many different topics, which all depends on what you are teaching. One of the great features is that there are paired reading passages that help you find related stories, topics, or skills. The K–12 grades, Lexile levels, topic areas, text kinds, and skill/strategy used are used to categorize reading passages as well. Numerous of the reading selections are suitable for adult education programs, and adult educators can utilize the Lexile data to choose reading selections that are at the right difficulty level for their students.

Readworks.org is great to use with your English language learners. The text-dependent questions and vocabulary materials can be used by teachers as is, or they can modify them and create writing prompts for students who may need more help with the assignments. Another great feature for English language learners is that there are audios for the text. Teachers can focus reading instruction by using StepReads and narration with human voiceovers for these students.

Teachers may find that Readworks.org is very useful as it could be used and connected to Google Classroom. This make it easy to assign assignments, reading passages, quizzes and home work. Another great thing about Readworks.org is that you can create personalized reading goals for students, which makes it easy to student track for interventions and enrichment. There are many useful interactive features upgrade varied, high-interest passages. Teachers are able to create reading groups based on interest, ability, fiction/nonfiction, etc.

In general, I think this is a great website for monitoring and instructing literacy in the classroom. With the high-quality nonfiction and fiction resources, teachers may engage and interest their students. This thoughtfully designed platform can accommodate all types of learners with an abundance of articles and videos with helpful features.
