EQ Effective literacy #5

 Whooo’s Reading (whooosereading.org)

Whooo’s Reading is a higher-level thinking alternative to multiple choice. Students get to write about what they read. This program engages students in both elementary and middle school in independent reading and being able to monitor their comprehension. This program lets you know who is actually reading and comprehending the stories.

The program has steps. Students take comprehension quizzes that ask depth-of-knowledge questions. There are over 500 thousand different book titles. The second step provides feedback to the students. The third and final step has teachers and administrators monitor progress.

Administrators like this program because it works with a lot of books at a school. Books can be found in the school library, online, or in a teacher’s classroom library. The program identifies which reading and writing skills need extra support. It aligns with the school’s state standards. The program differentiates to meet individual student needs.

I chose this as a literary website for the comprehension portion. This program targets students’ understanding of what they read. The depth of knowledge usage as well as the alignment to school standards help when lessons are being utilized in the classroom. The important part is how it differentiates students independent needs. Today’s classrooms are filled with students reading at different levels. There are also those who are beginner readers or reading several grades behind in the upper grades. As a sped resource room teacher I recommend a program like this for all teachers. It is there to ad on extra support for their struggling readers as well as a challenge for their instructional and independent readers.
