IRA Newsletter Project: Effective Literacy Website #5

Pacific Literacy Consortium (https://plchawaii.org/) is a collaborative program created by the Curriculum Research and Development Group, College of Education, and the University of Hawai’I at Manoa.  The main goals of this organization includes developing, implementing, and evaluating educational approaches that are designed to improve reading for young learners and create educational opportunities for the children in the Hawai’i educational system. This organization was made in partnership with the Hawai’i Department of Education so it has helped many educators and young learners in the state of Hawai’i.  The website provides reading support, curriculum enhancement activities, and even outreach programs for the less fortunate.

PLC has helped teachers and students across 56 public schools in Hawaiʻi.  They also offer teachers ongoing professional development opportunities that are based on authentic research which have been proven to be effective.   PLC integrates early screening for academic risk within a Multi-tiered System of Supports (MTSS) framework that incorporates practices found to have the strongest predictive relationship with children’s ability to decode and comprehend connected text. PLC also provides certain schools with technical assistance on the use of formative instruments for early screening.

Pacific Literacy Consortium (PLC) is a great organization which has helped many Hawaiian educators and learners alike.  The website provides tons of information that are intended to help not only the students but also teachers.  The goal of this organization is to make all children have access to a decent education and give proper trainings and authentic approaches to apply in classrooms with mostly ESL learners.
