IRA Newsletter Project: Effective Literacy Website Review #2

Roy the Zebra Website Literacy Review

Different reading programs at different cognitive development stages are essential to literacy skills. Emergent literacy prepares your child's brain with the skills they'll need to learn how to read.  Roy the Zebra at https://www.roythezebra.com is a website for emerging readers. It is an online guided reading site with interactive literacy games and just got modified last year. This website is aligned with the national curriculum. This website has been developed for its own purpose, yet it helps encompasses the knowledge, skills, and attitudes that a child develops in relation to reading and writing throughout the early childhood period. It is designed to help emerging readers have fun as they learn to read.

This website is operated by Tim Bowerbank trading as Roy Productions (1). Parents can access this website from home to help their children learn. It can be used at school too by teachers.  It is one of the most comprehensive interactive literacy resources on the net that is freely accessible, but this website is not password-protected.

All the stories are quick to access and engage early readers’ participation.  Lesson plan comes with these resources and activities.  These stories are compatible with Chromebook, tablets, iPad, and interactive whiteboards. This website is storing a package of interactive games, and other resources such as exciting guided reading stories, printable resources, and even songs that have been developed to help emerging readers have fun as they learn to read. For more content, you can log in to Club Roy the membership site for this website. It has 149 reading, spelling, and punctuation games over 13 different topics and 16 game themes. Most of these resources are fun and fresh. I found them pleasing and appealing too.

Roy the Zebra is often used as a tool to support readers who aren’t progressing as expected. It gives the readers interesting and different resource that builds their reading and spelling confidence and helps to establish an early love for reading.  Roy the Zebra is aimed at 5- to 7-year-olds and is free. Parents would find the lessons very easy to teach to their children and interesting.
