IRA Newsletter Project: Literacy Review on ReadTheory Website

Literacy Review #3

`                              You know that every student is different and they learn differently.  Read theory https://readtheory.org/ was a reading program for K-12. This program was designed and developed by Tanner Hock, a basic English instructor to support learning differences. This program assesses the reading ability to building reading comprehension and provided resources for students to read at their levels.  Read Theory fosters a dynamic classroom environment and this website allows the teacher the freedom to provide more individualized instruction. Basically, it is a powerful educational tool that offers online reading activities for all ages and ability levels. It is completely free of charge for an unlimited number of students per school.

In general, this program provides assessment, reading passages, games, and access to conference conversation.  Its progress report contains tons of data for analysis on pretest averages, program averages, grade-level progression, Lexile level progression, quiz history, and students’ progress reports. This program meets national benchmarks and is aligned with the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). To keep this program fun and motivational, Read Theory implemented games into its program. Students can enjoy playing games and learning at the same time.  Students earn points and achieve badges along with their reading scores.  They can also track their own progress as they play these games.  Unfortunately, lessons are not provided on this web, but teachers can check out other associated sites for those materials.

Unlike other online reading programs, Read Theory reading levels are never assigned manually. When students log in for the first time, they have to take a placement pretest. This placement pretest starts on a third-grade level by default. If that material is too difficult, the pretest will immediately adjust to show first and second-grade material instead.  Similarly, if it's too easy, the pretest will progressively move up to grades four, five, and beyond. You cannot skip this part and you have to have patience.  After our placement pretest, students will be placed at a level, and this program will draw a passage at random from within that level for the student. This program uses AI (Artificial Intelligence) which is demonstrated by machines to track students’ progress and determine a student’s level to assign passages that are perfect fits to their ability. I love this part.

The three things I value most about this website are; it is automatic functions, free of charge, and is safe.  Parents will be happy to know that registration accounts are not linked to identifiable information. Data for the children will never be shared with third parties of any kind. For students to log in, the teacher will provide the username and password. Students can access these programs from anywhere on any device.
