ReadWriteThink Literacy Website Review

Effective Literacy Website #1

After using the google search engine to learn about literacy websites, I found readwritethink.org to be interesting and I have decided to focus my research on it.

ReadWriteThink (https://www.readwritethink.org/classroom-resources) is an online resource dedicated to helping students with literacy learning. It was created by the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE). ReadWriteThink consists of a wide variety of educational materials covering different literacy areas including the four literacy components; reading, writing, listening and speaking. It provides everything from lesson plans to graphic organizers to printable ones. The site has consistently been one of the most information-rich literacy resources on the internet.  It is intended to help teachers find meaningful materials to help teach literacy to students. It  starts at K and runs right to grade 12 with the lesson and unit plans, activities, and more.

I personally like this website because it doesn't require us to sign-up for an account.  It is super organized and easy to navigate. We can use the integrated search functionality to filter resources based on criteria such as grade level, resource type, themes, learning objectives, and many more. Teachers can choose to print worksheets or have students work interactively in some cases. It also contains comprehensive and edible lesson plans that are printable. Every lesson plan on ReadWriteThink.org has been aligned to the IRA and NCTE Standards for the English Language Arts and is flexible with individual state standards and Common Core State Standards.  Furthermore, I find it very inspiriting with the provided lesson plans as it helps teachers to easily think about how to teach around a particular book. In addition, it also removes much of the work of the lesson planning process.

While there are a lot of printable resources, you can keep everything digital, downloading what you need and working with your online management system. This can make sharing resources with the class, outside of lesson time, easier. With the thousands of standards-based resources for teachers and students, you can be confident your students are getting the education they deserve.
