International Literacy Association Newsletter Weekly Project: Effective Literacy Website #3

From personal experience, I can say that nothing is more frustrating than a student who seems uninterested in the assignment you are working on because they allegedly "hate" writing and reading. Best thing to do in this case scenario is to change up what you are doing in the classroom. You may discover tons of fun exercises on this website, www.theliteracyplace.com/ to get your students interested in reading and writing. First off, the literacyplace.com was created by experienced teachers, Sheena Cameron and Louise Dempsey, who taught in many places in the US, New Zealand, and the UK. They taught at the primary level and had a passion for literacy. I add-on about this background information to show the true intentions of them wanting improve literacy in the classroom and wanting to help teachers around the world through professional learning workshops, school-based support, and free resources.

The website itself is easy to navigate and is organized by categories. On their homepage, you might assume that it is a store because it advertises their products that may be purchased. They sell books, stamps, and other digital products that may benefit you in the subjects of reading, writing, and speaking. As you scroll down though, you will see a link to free resources and Facebook page to follow for great ideas and shared activities.

When you select the Resources button at the top of the webpage, you will see a drop-down menu that will enable you to access the writing, oral language, and mini-lesson resources you need. The best thing about their resources linked is that you can quickly scan what you are about to download while viewing the activity. The resource makes clear what the activity's focal point is. It also describes what is contained in the link, including if it is a template or exemplar. The fact that the activities have instructive videos of digital stories that relate to the topic is another excellent feature of them.

Overall, the website is a great place to find resources for primary teachers in the classroom. The Literacy Place offers free reading and writing templates that may be downloaded and printed. There are a lot of mini-lessons, lesson plans, prompts for quick writing, and useful connections and ideas you can use in your classroom. It is something great to share with your colleagues and teacher friends.
