ReadingA-Z.com International Literacy Association Newsletter Weekly Project: Effective Literacy Website #4

Finding resources is one activity that many teachers appear to employ the majority of time when preparing to teach reading. While there are numerous free resources available that can be used to meet the needs of all types of learners, there are also paid resources that are just as beneficial. A site that I decided to review is ReadingA-Z.com. For a reasonable price, Reading A-Z provides online curriculum materials for all grade levels. As new books, lesson plans, and other resources are added each month, it is frequently updated. In addition, Reading A-Z has a large selection of teaching and learning resources to include more than 2,500 books that you may download in various forms.

Reading programs implemented in schools may be effective, but there are still some gaps that teachers may need to fill. ReadingA-Z.com offers not only books and reading lesson plans, but there are much more resources to include reader’s theater scripts, workshops, assessments, flashcards, graphic organizers, and worksheets. There are also other parts of the site that focus on phonological awareness and phonics lessons. The website offers free samples of these resources and a free trial for teachers to explore and try out.

The products on ReadingA-Z.com are in line with the Common Core State Standards, which is one of its best qualities. There are also a ton of leveled books available that cater to the individual needs of every student. There are 29 reading levels of leveled readers that are printable and projectable. Another unique feature is that the materials also have versions in English, Spanish, French, and British English.

Overall, I feel that ReadingA-Z.com would be a great source to use for differentiation, instructional design, and lesson planning. Its resources are extensive, easy-to-use, and printable. It may be pricey to use, but this is something your school may be able to purchase or collectively as a grade level to pay for it. It is most definitely a resource to explore for reading materials.
