IRA Newsletter Project #3 - Bookopolis

Bookopolis (https://bookopolis.com) is an online community for young readers aged 7-12. It aims to ignite a love for reading for fun, which is beneficial since research has shown that increases in time spent reading for fun is linked to higher academic performance, better job prospects, and stronger social and emotional skills. To achieve this goal, Bookopolis provides a safe and fun online platform for elementary and middle school kids to connect with other young readers, share book ideas, and discuss books they have read and enjoyed.

The platform offers a range of features to help kids discover new books and engage with other readers. One key feature is the personalized book recommendations for each reader based on the books they have read and like, as well as the preferences of other Bookopolis readers with similar tastes. They can also share what books they love, what books they are currently reading, and engage with friends and other readers in discussions about books. By participating in Bookopolis, kids are also learning good digital citizenship skills and how to be safe online, which is a top priority for the founder of the website as well.

To motivate kids to read more books and be proud of their reading accomplishments, the platform uses a positive peer competition approach, offering badges and points as rewards for a variety of reading-related activities such as adding books, writing reviews, and inviting friends. This takes the best elements from the gaming world and applies them to reading, making it more fun and engaging for kids.

Bookopolis is a valuable resource for teachers, who can use it to build a community of readers in their classroom. Teachers can create a library per class so each classmate within that period can share book reviews and swap book recommendations. They also practice persuasive writing, comprehension, and typing skills by completing reviews, reports, and reading logs online. Educators can sign up with a teacher account, set up classes and accounts for their students, and have access to a range of features and activities that align with several CCSS Reading and Writing Standards for students in Grades 2 - 7.
