IRA Newsletter Project #4 - Into the Book

Into the Book (https://reading.ecb.org) is a multimedia package designed to enhance the reading comprehension skills of elementary school students, as well as their ability to think and learn across the curriculum. Into the Book was developed by PBS Wisconsin Education in collaboration with the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction and a team of experienced educators. The video lessons and resources were produced by PBS Wisconsin and the Agency for Instructional Technology, while the website was created by Eduweb. The project was supported in part by Wisconsin's Reading First funding from the U.S. Department of Education.

The components included in the website are based on current research on reading comprehension and focuses on eight learning strategies that are essential for effective reading: using prior knowledge, making connections, questioning, visualizing, inferring, summarizing, evaluating, and synthesizing. To aid in the teaching and learning of these strategies, the website has a student website that features interactive reading comprehension activities, a teacher website that includes video clips, posters, teacher guides, lesson plans, and a matrix linking each activity with the Common Core State Standards in English Language Arts. There are also nine 15-minute classroom videos included which teaches children how to be strategic readers and a behind the lesson video series which includes nine 10-minute professional development videos that demonstrate effective ways of teaching the learning strategies.

Into the Book is an effective resource for improving literacy skills because it is based on current research that focuses on improving reading comprehension. The site provides a variety of resources to aid in that goal, including interactive activities, video clips, posters, teacher guides, and lesson plans. This variety of resources allows teachers to choose the most effective way of teaching the strategies based on the needs of their students and the class environment.
