Website Review # 6: Celia Chavez

 Website Review #6

This is my  final website review for ED638, and I have to say it’s probably my favorite of the 6. I came across Fliphtml5, an online flipbook creator. Membership is free, and after a quick and simple sign-up (I got the limited upgrade), I got started. I was immediately impressed with the program/site. It is extremely easy to use, which means all students would be able to take advantage of the features, and independently (with some guidance) create online books of their own. I will elaborate upon the different components of Fliphtml5, and how it can be utilized for authentic literacy instruction and learning.

How it Works:

To try out the automatic flipbook generator, I used the 6 Traits of Writing handout given to us for ED485. The program created a flipbook almost instantaneously, and I was instantly impressed. After creating the “flipping book,” you can customize so many different settings. Some options for customization include background design, page-turning sounds, and much more. Users can even add pictures. I think the easiest way to complete the flipping book is by creating a slide presentation on Canva, and getting all the pictures and graphics down on the document. Then, you can save the document to your computer and upload it onto Fliphtml5 from there.

In addition to creating a flipping book, there are so many options that you can choose in terms of publication, sharing, and other areas after the book has been created. There is a virtual bookshelf feature that allows you to collect your creations, in the order that you wish. You can even make money off your book by naming your price for others that might be interested in purchasing your book. This would be a great way to show students that literacy can lead to an actual lucrative career!

Application to Literacy

Fliphtml5 is literally completely about boosting literacy, transforming students into authors. It provides ownership over a child’s literacy development, and places that power in their hands. One great project would be to retell a story that students have read, while inserting their point-of-view and perspectives. Students can be tasked to create a book of local legends, or even a children’s book version of a more complicated story that they could share with their younger siblings and family members. The possibilities are endless with this site, and I have already included it in my next unit plan for my students. I recommend this site to every educator and parent out there. I think it would even be worth it to get the full membership, in order to improve the writing and reading process even more.
